If you make a check with mediocrity then you do so with an additional -2 penalty. This is referred to as being a mediocre. If a check would have mediocrity from multiple sources, then it still only gains the -2 penalty once. However, mediocre stacks with other penalties and bonuses, such as those granted by proficiency or fluency.
